The festival is celebrated aiming at honoring the special tourist product in Hoi An as well as expressing the gratitude of the locals to their ancestors. To prepare for the festival, all lights in the old town of Hoi An are turned off and the old town is transformed by flickering candlelight, multi-colored lanterns and hoards of visitors who have come to see the full moon lantern festival. Hoi An Bridge is the focus of the festival space with the splendid stage floating on the river and beautifully decorated as a huge lantern lightening inside.
A lot of spectacular lanterns with the huge size and various shapes shimmer throughout the square in Hoai River thought days and nights. From Hoi An Bridge to the floating stage is decorated with many magnificent ribbons. Along the sides of the Hoai River Square, the arrangement of all of the lanterns designed in various images of Japanese Covered Bridge, stars, dragons, turtles and others by the competitors combining with the sparkling light of the flower lanterns offers an extremely fanciful scenery for the visitors.
From the impressive welcome gate hung a lot of colorful lanterns in various sizes running along the sides of Hoai River to the center of the square, the local people and tourists are much more attracted by the festival with unforgettable memories.
The festival begins with the opening traditional music along with the performance of the festival flags on the stage. The candle lighting ceremony is solemnly carried out with the wine offering to the heaven and the earth. Following the opening ceremony is the ceremony of carrying the lanterns to the Hoai River. The small boats beautifully decorated are fulfilled with lanterns in the festival offering a stunning view on the river. Then all of audiences gather on Hoi An Bridge and watching spots to admire the striking ceremony of releasing lanterns. This is considered the most impressive ceremony in the festival.
Joining the festival, people have a lot of opportunities to participate in various traditional activities such as candlelit Chinese chess, Bai choi which is a bit like a musical bingo. Tourists should not miss the chances to enjoy many delights of the locals like Cao Lau Hoi An, Moon cakes.
Hoi An Lantern Festival is not only the occasion for the local people to honor their ancestor but also to introduce the image of Hue to all the country in the world. This traditional festival attracts an increasing number of both domestic and international tourists, making a significant contribution to the local tourism.
