Colourful flower lanterns in the Hoai River
Rough Guides described Hoi An city (Vietnam) is an old town, located at the low stream of Thu Bon river, on the coastal plain of Quang Nam Province, about 30 km south of Da Nang City.
From the 16th to 19th century, this city was an important and prosperous international port and a commercial center of Japanese, Chinese, Indian and western merchants. The harmonious influences of the Vietnamese, the Chinese and the Japanese have contributed to make Hoi An a community with cultural diversity. “Lantern culture” is one of the characters which is only seen in Hoi An.
In order to recreate the old Hoi An landscape, since February 2015, the “Hoi An Ancient Town Night programme” has been held twice a month, on the 1st and 14th days of every lunar month. Taking part in the event, tourists can mix with the life of the local residents in some activities such as going shopping at Hoi An night market, hát Tuồng (Vietnamese traditional opera) and bai Choi performance, street music, flower lanterns in Hoai River… Instead of electric light is the magic light from thousands of Chinese or Japanese style colourful lanterns hanging under the eaves, front doors and along the streets…
